Snoring is a very recognizable symptom and warning sign of sleep apnea, which is a very serious and common sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is a condition where one does not get enough oxygen during sleep. This means unrestful sleep and danger of serious medical conditions including death. One in four adults has sleep apnea and the odds of contracting this condition increase with age. Because of the seriousness of this condition, Dr. Weiser is an active member of The Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea, The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
For snorers, Dr. Weiser can address the immediate problem with a number of treatments. The basic idea is to keep the airway as fully open as possible. It is the blockage of one’s airway tha causes the snoring sound. This can be accomplished with a CPAP machine, which is an mechanical apparatus that fits over the nose and mouth and keeps the airway open. However, due to the complexity of the machine and its use, most people do not stay with the treatment. Dr. Weiser offers a more easy-to-use alternative with customized oral appliances. Like mouthpieces or mouthguards, a custom oral appliance keeps the jaw in position thereby keeping the airway open and eliminating snoring.

If you snore or do not awaken feeling rested, take this Sleepiness Test to find out if you might have sleep apnea. If you do, it is highly suggested that you meet with Dr. Weiser about treating this condition.
